The Security Breach of MyFitnessPal

It was reported on March 29, 2018 that more than 150 million users’ data of a popular fitness app called MyFitnessPal had been hacked. The data which was stolen comprised of the users’ usernames, email addresses and passwords. After the company noticed that an unauthorized person had accessed the data on February, they immediately started to notify their users through in-app messaging and emails. The company then urged their users to immediately change their passwords. Unfortunately, the identity and whereabouts of the people/s who had orchestrated the breach which stole the data of millions of people is still unknown.

Under Armour, MyFitnessPal’s parent company, then claimed that their users’ financial information were not affected by the breach in any way. The damage of the data breach is considered moderate since the company does not require any government-issued identifiers like driver’s license numbers or social security numbers. Right now, the company is trying to find out how the hackers were able to access their system without being noticed.

And although having your fitness and dietary progress stolen may seem like it doesn’t matter, the information can still have bigger power than what the users may think. For example, the app has the ability to collect precise performance and the location data of its users. Meaning, if someone else has access to a user’s account, they will be able to know where exactly a user is and how fast the user is going. The users are then in potential danger and can be tracked by whoever holds their data.

Securing Your Data

This is an important reminder that any personal data can be easily hacked in this age of modern technology. In order to secure their private data, listed below are some of the things that individuals can do in order to secure their own private data.

Setting Complex Passwords

Though a lot of people prefer using generic and easy passwords, it is still best to put some thought and effort in setting your passwords. Though it is a very small detail, hackers may still end up having a hard time in cracking your password if you set it into a difficult one, thus protecting your account until the issue is fixed.

2. Reading Through the Terms and Services Conditions

While lots of people may like skipping on the terms and services, it is still very crucial that users are aware of what exactly the app is going to do with their information. It is very important that the users are aware of the capabilities of the app itself.

While data breaches like these are becoming more common in this age of technology and companies have the ability to protect its users, it is still important that users take precautionary measures in protecting their data.
